WHAT’S MIKE BEEN ENJOYING LATELY?
HOT WINE PICKS
August 2004

Summer’s here, and the weather brings hot humid days and warm nights.  This is a  great season for selecting wines for Summer dishes, as well as wines just for good sipping refreshment.  This month, Mike Da Wine Guy’s 2 Thumbs Up List includes several newcomers I found during wine events, shows, and tastings the past month.  I covered the gammit – from good values to wines to splurge on for  “weekend grillin’ & chillin’.

2002 Badger Mountain Rosé of Cabernet (Washington)
Bill Powers of Powers Winery shows us that Cabernet Franc comes in a dark rosé color, as well as red.  Dark strawberry color and taste, with a refreshing dryness to quench any thirst.  Enjoy while watching the sunset on the deck, with simple or meaty salads, and with grilled chicken.   $8.99
Charles Wiffen Sauvignon Blanc (New Zealand)
Another great wine from the land of kiwi fruit and lamb!  A light herbal, basil aroma on the nose is accompanied with lots of passion fruit, kiwi, and mango.  A touch of oak gives this wine a great finish.  Enjoy with shellfish and seafood, especially steamed clams, grilled salmon, or mahi-mahi!   $12.99
2001 Bogel “Phantom” Old Vine Blend (California)
A MUST HAVE WINE!  This blend of Old Vine 40% Zinfandel 50% Petite Sirah 10% Mourvedre has a medium dark color, and lots of wonderfully smooth black cherry and raspberry taste and flavor.  The tannins are soft (hey, its old vines) and the wine has a pleasing touch of oak on the finish that lingers and lingers.  Enjoy this red wine with a good grilled steak or even barbequed chicken.  Watch out – this wine may run out fast as it did last year!  $18.99
2000 Beaulieu Vineyard Tapestry Reserve  (Napa, California)
BV has shown that they can make another great wine to stand along side their infamous Private Reserve Cabernet   This Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc/Merlot/Petit Verdot blend is big and brawny.  Deep black color, lots of chocolate and berry flavors, firm tannins (but not overwhelming).  Hints of roastiness, and one heck of a finish that will keep you in awe for minutes at a time.  This wine will make the night memorable accompanied by a big rib eye steak, rack of lamb, or barbequed ribs on the grill.   A super buy right now, as this wine is
Regularly $54.99, on sale for $36.99 while supplies last!!!
