HOT WINE PICKS ARCHIVE

May 2004
2001 Chateau Benoit Müller-Thurgau (Willamette Valley, Oregon)
This grape, seldom heard outside of Germany, is making a home in Willamette Valley right
along side Riesling and Pinot Gris. Enjoy the crispness of a dry Riesling, but with the peachy apricot and pineapple of a Chenin Blanc. This wine is a joy to relax with, or serve as an aperitif. On the second glass, visions of Cajun, Thai, and other oriental style dishes come dancing in the mind, so there are several places at the table this wine belongs! $8.99

2002 Cuevas de Castilla Cuvée R.S.  White Wine  (Rueda, Spain)
Spain is in the fast lane as a white wine producer.  This nice little white wine is a blend of 3 grapes including Viura and Sauvignon Blanc (one swirl of the glass and a sniff, and the herbal, grapefruit tones jump out of the glass!).  Crisp, clean taste.  Great for seafood, light dishes, or just sip it on the deck.!  $9.99

2002 Montinore Estate Pinot Gris (Willamette Valley, Oregon)
A new Pinot Gris to arrive on the scene to join the greatness that Willamette Valley offers in this wine.  Not as dry as other Pinot Gris, softer, with lots of green pear and a little lime on the finish.  A great alternative to Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.  A wine you can eat alone, ordrink it with anything except beef, lamb, or veal.  And I’ll bet it will go well with a Caesar or Cobb salad too!  $12.99

2002 Cousiño-Macul  Cabernet Sauvignon  Antiguas Reservas (Maipo Valley, Chile)
Look out folks, Chile shows us how great their reds can be in this very tasty and enjoyable Cabernet.  Lots of juicy raspberry and hints of vanilla on the nose and in the taste.  An intense flavor that you’ll want to swirl and enjoy while you’re cooking.  A very long finish makes this $15.99 wine a steal – enjoy it with a great steak or London Broil!

2000 Clos Du Bois Merlot  (Sonoma County, California)   ***On Sale!***
Just ask the recent “Studies In Grape” class, and they’ll tell you this wine charmed even the non-red wine drinker with its unexpected ultra smoothness.  Swirl a glass, and release the aromas of big berry fruit, yet smooth and velvety on the palate.  Another great steak wine, or enjoy it with kabobs from the grill.  I also found it a great accompaniment to spicy chicken. This wine does not need aging, but it can last for some time if you wanted to put a few bottles down.  Regular $18.99, but now on sale for $14.99 – so you better get it while its available!.
